Being told that your child has epilepsy can be a shocking or even a traumatic experience for any parent. Faced with this news, most parents are anxious to obtain all the facts and to learn as much about epilepsy as they possibly can. A great deal of information is already available in various formats – medical textbooks, books, leaflets, videos, audiocassettes, even computer packages. There are also various epilepsy associations that can provide help, advice and information. So why, with all this information available, is there a need for another book on the subject? Above all, we felt that parents of children with epilepsy deserved a book that was written especially for them. To the best of our knowledge, Epilepsy and your Child – the ‘at your fingertips’ guide is the first British book about epilepsy specifically written for parents, despite the fact that, in the United Kingdom at least, over 80 parents a day are told that their children have epilepsy. The questions we have answered are real questions that have been asked by many parents of children with epilepsy. We have tried to cover all aspects of epilepsy in children: as well as the obvious medical issues (e.g. the different types of epilepsy and the different treatments available), there are many questions on the important social issues that relate to children (e.g. school, other people’s attitudes to epilepsy, sports and other recreational activities, and growing up).
